Housing
Cool, Vern, that you're running for office. But I am looking for some help now. What do?
I get you. I really do. Finding the help you need in our current set up is, well, frustrating, and this is coming from someone who feels like they're pretty decent at finding answers to questions. So I'm working on a one-stop-shop for whatever it is you are looking for. Don't see anything you think could help? Try calling 211 (a state-wide help line) or head to my contact page and drop me a line there. Please note, that this list is non-exhaustive and is focused on Grafton District 1 and the immediate area. Please also note that being on this list does not mean I condone, have worked with, or have vetted these businesses on a personal level.

Foreclosure/Eviction
If you are facing foreclosure, eviction, or are having problems with your servicer or landlord, there are avenues for help.
If you are behind on your mortgage but have not been referred for foreclosure, please reach out to AHEAD below, who can help you through the process of loss mitigation with your servicer to see if they will offer you a solution to get back on track.
If you are in active foreclosure, the sooner you reach out for assistance, the better your chances are of staying in your home. If you have received an auction date on your home, please reach out to 603 Legal Aid, who can help you file a motion to stay the auction while you figure out what options might be available to you through loss mitigation with your servicer (as long as you income qualify for their assistance). They will not assist cases with an auction date within 10 days, so it is important to reach out as soon as you receive notice, which will come through registered mail.
603 Legal Aid should also be the place to reach out to for other legal services, such as your landlord withholding heat, water, or other utilities covered by the lease agreement, or other tenant issues, such as being served an eviction notice.
Utilities
If you are facing financial difficulty paying your utility bills, there are a few places to look for assistance, but none of them are guaranteed. You should reach out to your town's welfare office, who can also point you in the direction of other services. If you income qualify, you can receive assistance paying for heat or get discounts on your heating and electric services through Tri County CAP, who offer a wide array of services for residents in Coos, Grafton, and Carroll counties. Other possibilities:
NH Catholic Charities
The Berlin location of the Salvation Army
Urgent or Imminent Loss of Housing
If you are facing an imminent eviction with no other ways to sort out the situation, Tri County CAP also runs a regional housing program, and can help you with resources to manage your situation.
